Classes

* Mini - Tamiya FWD Mini only, Touring Car wheels allowed, 12 turn motor wind minimum, no speed-tuned gears, max 20t pinion, 6 cells, Mini bodyshells only (SWB or LWB).

* Off-Road - Any car 2WD/4WD, any motor (brushless included), 6 cells, no tyre restrictions.

* 1/12th - RWD 1/12th pan chassis, 6 cell, any motor (brushless included) , no bodyshell restrictions.

* Pro 10 - RWD 1/10th pan chassis, 6 cell, any motor (brushless included) , no bodyshell restrictions.

* F1 - F201, F103, HPI, Corally, Kyosho etc. Basically any F1 chassis with F1 or LeMans shell. Any motor (brushless included) , 6 cells, No tyre restrictions.

* Touring Car Stock - 2WD/4WD Touring cars, ROAR stock motor, 6 cells. no tyre restrictions, no bodyshell restrictions.

* Touring Car Mod - 2WD/4WD Touring cars, any motor (including brushless), no tyre restrictions, no bodyshell restrictions, 6 cells.

* Open Nitro - .15 and above, 2 or 3 speed, 1/10th scale, anything goes pretty much.

* Nitro Pro Tourer - Up to .15, 2 speed, no bodyshell restrictions, no tyre restrictions.

* 1/8th Nitro - Open.

* 1/5th - Open.

 

 

Velodrome: FAQ

Q: I'd like to run my car at the velodrome but I'm scared it will break apart from the extreme speeds, is this true?

A; No, while the speeds are 20-30kmh higher than a normal r/c event the track is twice the width of a normal r/c track, at 6 metres wide you can easily recover should your car slide out of control. If you slide into the infield you will hit nice soft grass. If you slide up the wall you have a few metres in which to recover, and the banking is so steep that you wash off quite a lot of speed. 95% of people racing at the velodrome never break their car.

 

Q: Will I need to perform a lot of modifcations to my car to make it fast?

A: No, for mini class the only setup changes needed will be a set of touring car wheels and a 12 turn motor. For touring car and pan car classes it's just a matter of bolting in your favourite modified motor (be it brushless or otherwise) and holding on!

For nitro classes it's just a matter of richening the mixture a little.

 

Q: Do I need an expensive hand wound motor to be competitive? How about an expensive brushless system?

A: No, in the past 2 velodrome events both mini and touring car classes have been won with cheaper machine wound motors.

 

Q: Do I need to buy expensive rubber cap tyres to be fast?

A: No, your standard rubber tyres will work fine, any compound or brand works, this also applies for foam tyres. Neither foam or rubber will offer you any performance advantage. Be sure to glue your tyres well, and check between every race. In the velodrome event held earlier this year both mini and touring car Top Qualifier were using Tamiya standard radial kit tyres.

 

Q: How hard is it to drive the track at high speed?

A: Go straight turn left, go straight turn left, sounds easy enough! The track is a bit of an equalizer for driving experience, typically drivers who are 1 or 2 laps off the pace at a normal r/c track can easily be front runners here. TQ for mini class earlier this year was a lap off the pace at a normal r/c track, yet at the velodrome he was easily able to outqualify the better drivers.

 

Q: Can I charge my batteries at the track?

A: Yes, there will be a generator at the track to supply all of your power needs.

 

Q: I heard there were no toilets at the velodrome, is this true?

A: In past years this was the case, but now we have full access to the Coburg Cycling clubs clubrooms and toilets.

 

Q: I've never been to the velodrome before, will there be a chance to practice before the event?

A: Yes, there will be an open practice day 2 weeks before the event, date will be announced on the website, the track will also be open for practice from 8am on the day of the event.

 

Q: So how fast do the cars really go?

A: A touring car with a stock motor and correct gearing will hit 60-65kmh, a mini with a 12 turn motor will hit 70kmh, a touring car will do anywhere from 70-80kmh, a pan car or 12th scale from 80-90kmh, most nitro cars 80-90kmh, and cars in the top speed shoot out have hit 100kmh! Note: All of these speeds were measured with an accurate radar gun at the Feb 2005 event.
